One Cut of the Dead (2019)

  • Sticks the landing. (Great ending.)
  • A very original premise.
  • Extremely entertaining.

  • It’s not a traditional horror movie.
  • Won’t be everyone’s cup of tea.

I’m here to tell you to watch One Cut of the Dead, a 2017 Japanese zombie comedy that is causing quite a buzz in the horror community. Let’s just say that it centers around the filming of a low budget zombie movie and it’s like nothing else you’ve ever seen. Unfortunately, I’m not going to tell you much more than that. You’ll thank me later. The less you know about this film going in, the better.

Seriously, don’t watch the trailer or even look at the poster. Just watch the movie.

Turn it on, pay attention and have patience. There will be times where you may wonder what the heck is happening or where it’s going. Trust me, just stick with it until the end.

For what it’s worth, two out of three of us on the Final Guys podcast really enjoyed One Cut of the Dead. Hunter was not as impressed or entertained as Jason and me. We really liked it. It’s not a “traditional” horror movie, but it’s definitely made for horror fans.

It was refreshing to find something so original, well-written and incredibly executed, all done on a microscopic budget.

Watching One Cut of the Dead was an experience. It’s funny, it kept me guessing and it paid off big in the end. Seriously, the third act of this movie is really something. I had a big smile on my face as the final credits rolled.

I think you’re going to like this movie. Even if it turns out that you’re not a huge fan of this film, it’s worth checking out just to see something so creative and different.
